Making decisions based on emotion can saddle a homeowner with a money pit. So equip yourself and keep your search for the perfect house on track. Which questions are crucial? You'll find them on my home buyer's checklist.
Kate's Home Buyer's Checklist
Repairs: What repairs are immediately necessary?
Updating: Does the house need expensive updating?
Size: Is the square footage sufficient for future needs?
Rooms: How about the number of bedrooms and bathrooms?
Structure: Are the structural components strong?
Systems: Is the plumbing, heating and electrical systems in working order?
Appliances: Are appliances staying with the house and under warranty?
Yard: Is the yard a sufficient size?
Furniture: Do the rooms accommodate your furniture?
Storage: Are there enough cabinets and closets?
When you are out shopping for homes, bring along a tape measure, flash light, and note pad in addition to my Home Buyer's Checklist.
For ease of comparison, keep individual answers for each house. Create a method to score each item on the checklist. Be consistent so when you get back home, you can analyze the scores. The next day, call your Realtor to review the results once more.
